LUCK

Does luck exist or is it just a myth?

Something that you always blame for your failure and don't mention in your success

Luck. That one word we hear when we start hearing. Every time we fail, anytime someone succeeds we use this word to describe the situation.

But is luck real, or just a myth that we use to justify some things that we have no control over, or don't want a reason for?

At one point, I didn't believe in luck, at one point I believed in it too much.

But later on, I read a book: “The unfair advantage”. There are other great books about it too, but this one tells us the exact amount of the luck spice in our recipes.

When to use it for justification and when to blame yourself. When to work hard and when to believe in luck.

Before we continue, I would love to show this quote that you might like:

Luck is believing you’re lucky— Tennessee Williams

When do we actually see luck

The author(s) explain that luck kind of plays 50% or less. We can only see our luck when we give our full.

For example, you want to be a president. You work hard, make connections and everything. When you reach your full potential, giving your everything then and only then will luck show its face.

Your family background will start to play out, your class will too(I am not a racist but the people you are leading, are), your financial background for political campaigns and also your social status and location.

So luck is mostly used wrong, only for justifying failure by most people.

The MILES Framework

In the book, the authors explain luck by a framework of their own. Which they call the MILES framework.

MILES framework by the unfair academy

These all are the luck factors that play in our life. Luck is a separate point in this framework, but actually, all these pieces form one thing and that is luck.

In the prior example, I mentioned how these factors will affect your success in which way.

Money

Money, the money from your parent or the family. The starting aid that you have in your life. If you have this money factor in your aid, you are much near success(If you are not a brat of course).

If you want to start a business, you can go on for it. You don't need to accumulate it first by working 9–5. You can just take the risk. And never worry about it.

Intelligence

Motivation aside, not everybody is Stephen Hawking or Young Sheldon. People have different levels of intelligence. Not everybody can invent something new.

Of course, we can improve it but it still has to do with genes. So this factor also plays a role in one's life.

Location

I live in Pakistan. I can never earn from the medium partner program. I can't monetize my stories, even though I put much effort into it. I can't have affiliate programs to earn from.

That’s the location factor. And it's the worst of all.

Now people living in let's say UK or US have more opportunities than me. Get 100 followers and start making $100 per story. Simple. But I cannot just do that.

Education

This factor is about the schools you have been through. And this is connected with other factors too, like money.

if you have been to Harvard and a friend of yours has been to a local university in the Philippines, who do you think will have more visibility in terms of CV?

Of course, we can improve our education through self-learning, but the facts that I mentioned earlier are, well, facts.

Status

Go search on the backgrounds of any political leader you know of. Most probably they are from an elite family.

Only some leaders come from the main populations, like nelson mandela.

Even if the ones you searched for didn't have much money, they will for sure have social status in terms of a family tree or connection to strong entities.

That's what lets them climb up the political ladder.

Let's say your father is the CEO of a company. And you and I both studied at the same institution, who do you think, even if your father is a meritocratic, will have more chances of getting selected?

Of course, you will be, because you have direct contact with the CEO. He knows you, and it's legal for a CEO to suggest a candidate to an HR.

You can actually control your luck

Yup, you can. The way to do this is to exhaust the opportunities and working limit. What does that mean? well.

You should look for any opportunity you can find. And utilize it.

Work harder. You have to work harder, that's luck. But if you fail that's not luck — Author

So work more than someone who has those factors in their favour. And you will find a way through one of the opportunities.

Find the factor that you have

The Authors of the book call these factors, unfair advantages, hence the name “The Unfair Advantage”.

You need to find one of those that we have and utilize it to break the luck barrier and be successful.

Those of us who do not have rich parents, social status or a good location, we usually have good intelligence. So utilize it to improve other factors like making good money.

And hence improving your luck factor. Now you have luck. So be lucky and go enjoy life.

Final thoughts

Luck plays less than 50% of your life. Luck is defined by you. You can also improve luck, by focusing on the luck factors that I described in this story.

You also need to find that one factor that works for you. And utilize it.

You need to work harder on some factors. So work hard, improve your luck and enjoy life.
