With 9–5 slowly dying and everyone starting a side hustle to create more independence, we’re beginning to see that we don’t need to be tied down to one employer; instead, we have a large stream of opportunities that can give us more freedom and money.

However, in all of that, one thing that accelerates your growth in any online endeavor is your personal brand. We prefer to do business with small businesses and shy away from larger companies because of the relationship and how easy it is to communicate with the business owners.

The people who will leverage their personal brands are the ones who will win in the emerging gig economy.

The gig economy is coming in full force because with freelancers springing up everywhere, brands and employees now see that they can get access to a broader pool of talent cheaper and with no commitments.

And what separates one freelancer from another is their personal brand. Your personal brand helps you stand out from the crowd.

It’s why you see content creators and freelancers, in general, leveraging social media to create awareness around their personal brand. All over Twitter, you have people solely focused on their niche, talking about what they do and their work journey.

You won’t blame anyone who always talks about work on social media — it’s a form of marketing for their brand.

If you’ve been reading my content consistently, you’d have noticed that most of what I talk about is in the freelancing and writing space. It’s my way of growing my personal brand. It’s my way of marketing what I do.

I’ve had many people reach out to me for work, simply because of how I’ve portrayed the brand.

This is what you should do too.

As a freelancer or content creator or whoever, your personal brand is simply what people know you for.

A personal brand is nothing new. Digital marketing has just revolutionalized it to mean someone who is an authority in a particular field.

Anyone can become an authority. You have to keep talking about things related to your expertise for an extended period.

If I continue on this path for the next five years, you will start to see me as an authority.

But if I keep changing specialties and every year, and keep jumping from one industry to another, you will lose interest because of the lack of consistency.

According to Forbes, the eight rules of personal branding include;

  • Have a Focus
  • Be Genuine
  • Tell your story
  • Be Consistent
  • Be ready to fail
  • Create a positive impact
  • Follow a successful example
  • Be your brand

I don’t need to go into too much detail because these points are pretty easy to understand. So, start from where you are and start building your personal brand today.
