As noted by the assistant itself, AI writing tools are unable to capture complex emotions, draw from personal experiences (outside the internet) or fact-check themselves, and are thus unlikely to completely replace humans. AI writing tools are also limited in their ability to access up-to-date statistics and real world data. For example, when I asked ChatGPT “How many users does Chat GPT have?” I received the following response:
As a large language model trained by OpenAI, I am not able to provide information about the specific number of users that ChatGPT or any other chatbot or software program may have. My knowledge and capabilities are limited to the information I have been trained on, and do not include any information about the number of users or popularity of specific chatbots or software programs. I am a machine learning model designed to assist with generating human-like text, and do not have access to information about user statistics or other real-world data.
The answer to my question, according to ChatGPT CEO Sam Altman, is that the AI assistant gained more than 1 million users within only a few days of launching.
Despite its limitations, ChatGPT manages to take on an astoundingly natural tone with few, if any, grammatical errors or spelling mistakes. Alongside its ability to sift through the internet’s combined knowledge and generate ideas, ChatGPT’s handle on natural dialogue makes the writing process faster, easier, and more efficient. However, ChatGPT and similar tools are not capable of fact checking and it is important not to rely entirely on AI writing assistants. Also, AI assistants effectively compile content already available on the internet, so their answers may not be as original or nuanced as those of human authors.
