How To Get a Job In AWS Cloud & DevOps

Hey developers or the people who do not have any IT background but looking for a job! Do you consider starting a new career journey in AWS Cloud and DevOps fields… If you get excited but still have some concerns about whether you are eligible to obtain the required skills and do the job accordingly, please be patient and follow my advice.

Today, many people, for some reason, want to change their career or want to start a brand new career from scratch. It is normal, as a human being, we need a job to survive and pay the bills. Which job is suitable for you? Most of the time, it is not easy to answer this question.

The jobs, their popularity, personnel need in that sector, and the benefits of the change according to the time. Nowadays, most companies shift their infrastructure to the cloud to answer the industry's dynamic and agile requirements. The market is agile and requires fast and stable deliveries to survive and successfully compete. To answer this need, a new discipline, blending of Cloud and DevOps fields, is born. So there are, and will be, many job opportunities for Cloud and DevOps engineers. The question is, “Are you the right person for this field?”. I will try to shed some light on this subject and clarify the fog in your mind.

As a candidate to get proficiency in AWS Cloud & DevOps field, in your early career, you may be a self-taught Python developer, Java developer, or interested in some different IT stuff, worked in various projects and developed some applications, automated processes, and built web applications… Maybe you have already worked in different IT positions and feel bored with your recent career… And ultimately, you have decided to find a job in an AWS Cloud & DevOps position. You may even work hard to acquire the skills needed in this field. Those DevOps skills may cover AWS services, CI/CD tools like Jenkins, Bash/Python Scripting, Git/Github, Linux, etc. So you have started to learn about DevOps and found it very exciting. Furthermore, maybe, you do not have any degree/diploma, and you have learned everything by yourself or by participating in online training.

You may still be wondering about DevOps. Moreover, you are unsure if you can make a career in this field, easily find a job, and what is the good time to start looking for one.

I must clarify that there are many job opportunities in this sector, but you must be equipped with the required skills to apply for a DevOps position. Make up your mind and follow these guidelines;

Start researching on multiple DevOps jobs postings.

Find out what competencies you should have.

Ask yourself if you are eligible or eager for these qualifications.

If the answer is yes, spend time to learn them not only in theory but also make some practice.

Practice, Practice, and Practice…

To find a job in this field, you must have the following skills;

Required skills for a DevOps Engineer are ;

1. Proficient knowledge in scripting (Linux/Unix shell scripts / Python / Ruby, etc.)

2. Hands-on experience in Configuration Management and Deployment tools (Ansible / Terraform / Chef / Puppet /, etc.)

3. Good knowledge in CI/CD tools (Jenkins / TeamCity / Bamboo / Travis CI, etc.)

4. Building CI/CD pipelines good knowledge in GIT (GitHub / GitLab / Bitbucket) or SCM tools (SVN, TFS, etc.)

5. Good knowledge in complete Software Development Life Cycle.

6.Good knowledge in integrating SCM, Code Quality, Code Coverage, and Testing tools for CI/CD pipelines.

7. Knowledge in Containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes is highly desirable.

8. Experience in DevOps Services of cloud vendors (AWS/Azure/GCP, etc.) is desirable.

9. Exposure to application and infrastructure monitoring tools is desirable…

Keep in mind that you don’t have to know everything and every tool, but a general understanding of all the skills mentioned above plus expertise in at least one skill is enough to get started with DevOps.

Nowadays, there are many open-source tools, freeware, and also study materials online. Do not be intimidated and discouraged if you do not have any background in DevOps. It is possible to learn them if you put in time and effort and show remarkable passion and interest in learning AWS Cloud & DevOps skills. I recommend you go for the online training covering lab and theory, interaction with the tutor, support from mentors, and improved collaboration with online tools such as slack.
