Do you remember what you did on December 22nd 2017? I’m sure for most people, it was a day like any other. Maybe you did your Christmas shopping, maybe you were at work, or maybe you enjoying the pre-Christmas cheer at home with your family.

For me, I remember that day like it was yesterday — because it’s the day that my financial world began crashing down around me.

Let’s start at the beginning

Back in 2016, my wife and I moved in with her parents to try and save money to buy our own house. Previously we’d been renting, and let’s just say that trying to save money while paying £750 ($1000) per month in rent is no picnic.

We moved in with my in-laws, our expenses dropped, and we were able to save pretty much all the money we’d formerly paid as rent.

Things were looking up.

Fast forward to mid-2017. We’re still saving every month, and yet it felt like we were lightyears away from our goal. I picked up extra hours at work, I even contemplated picking up an evening job at a bar…
