What are XPDL and BPMN?

As technology is continuously updating, organizations use process tools for their day-to-day processes. To exchange process definitions, users make use of XPDL in accomplishing their process-oriented tasks, such as simulation and optimization of their everyday process and also for their future tasks. XPDL stands for SML Process Definition Language. It is an XML-based construct used in describing workflows. This type of standardized language was designed within workflow management systems and offers the greatest possible flexibility. [1]

XPDL is also referred to as a storable representation of Business Process Model Notation (BPMN). BPMN is a graphical notation used in describing workflows, where these workflows are being enabled by XPDL to be exchangeable across borders. For example, different web services are provided to verify the conformance class of the files. With this, the workflow management system will be fed with the required information.
