Short answer: Don’t overthink it.

Don’t let the fear of looking messy stop you from doing what you enjoy and love. Hidden inside the mess is our true and authentic self. The self that glows, joyously and honestly.

But if that isn’t enough to help you out, here are 5 simple tips to overcome the fear of content creation.

Know that your content is valuable

The reason so many of us hold back from content creation is because we don’t think our feeds are pretty enough or that we don’t have enough to say. Take my advice and my painful past experience. Don’t worry about it. Just because most people have a gorgeous feed with the perfect lighting does not mean your content does not have value. Put it out there. Your genuine audience will find it

Stick to simplicity

Just because a certain kind of content format exists, doesn’t mean you need to adopt it with a raving fan’s adoration. For instance, on Instagram, I don’t do Instagram reels at all. I neither have the time nor the bandwidth to understand how they work.

Does that mean they’re not useful? Oh they are and for those who use them well, I say stick with it. Me? I aim to simplify and minimize work as much as possible. So I’ll stick to images, carousels, IGTV, stories and Instagram Live (which itself sounds like a lot!)

Enjoy the process

There is no guarantee when it comes to how a piece of content will perform. Something which you spend hours over may get a bit of engagement. Something you post spontaneously will get tons of it.

Why overthink this then? Just enjoy the process of creating anyway

Don’t aim for virality

We always create from a space of anticipation. My secret? I put out every piece of content believing that nobody will read it. No, seriously!

In fact, most of my Facebook business page posts, my Medium posts and tweets don’t take off or get any views and guess what, it’s okay! What matters is that you put it out there. That counts for a whole lot.

Write for one person

Think of an audience member who sent you a direct message or an email and expressed a deep challenge that they are facing. Write an answer to that question and create it as a piece of content. Put it up. Even if it doesn’t help the vast majority of people, it will help that one person who asked you about it. It’s like a personal & one on one chat with a friend. Why would you pass that up?

I talk regularly about blogging, social media & content creation from a space of authentic belief on my blog. If newsletters are more your thing, sign up for my free Friday newsletter for content creators.
